Zonta International mission:  a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy

Zonta International is a classified service organization which began over 85 years ago with the formation of the first club in Buffalo, New York in 1919. There are now over 1,200 clubs in over 67 countries around the world including some newer ones from those countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain.

THE YELLOW ROSE

The yellow rose is the Zonta flower. The Zonta Club of Lapeer Area is selling Zonta International Roses developed by Harkness Roses in England. The rose was officially named Zonta International Rose in July 1999 at a special ceremony at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen . It is consistent in every climate making it a good choice for our colder area. It has medium to large double blooms, bright green glossy foliage, peachy golden yellow color that holds to the very end with a moderate fruity fragrance and great disease resistance. Lapeer Zonta has arranged with Perkins Yard & Garden in Lapeer to purchase the bare root plants from the US distributor, Weeks Roses.  Perkins  pots and prepares the plants for a healthy spring addition into your garden. In addition to sales by Lapeer members, they can be ordered by any District XV Club to be delivered to Zontians at Spring Area Workshops at the end of April/beginning of May. Each plant comes with a wonderful care card which has a beautiful picture of the roses and detailed instructions on how to care for them. This is a District XV Rose Day project and proceeds from roses sold to other Zontians go to District XV to support an award to the District nominee for the Zonta International Foundation's Jane M. Klausman Scholarship for Women in Business .  Perkins did a program for the Lapeer Club in April 2006 on caring for the roses and  notes were prepared and made available. Perkins is also willing to address any questions that arise related to the care of your roses after purchase.  Additionally Weeks Roses has information on rose care * and on pruning *. They are beautiful roses and were used at the Zonta International Convention in Paris.  In 2000 the Club began adding some other varieties of roses to complement the Zonta rose in your gardens.  All sales are on a first come, first served basis. Rose selections for 2008 are now available for order. (Give document time to load all photos). Lapeer Area residents can order using same form included on the "Rose selection" document.  Contact Phyllis Clark 664-1445 with questions.

Service Projects

Zonta Club of Lapeer accepts applications for local service projects that are consistent with its mission through an application process.  The application form should be self explanatory.  Following are some of the projects supported by the Zonta Club of Lapeer Area.

Coats for Kids--In the past funds were solicited as were names of children in need of coats for winter. Beginning in 1996 the children are identified through the Holiday Depot (a collaboration of organizations providing various forms of support for families at Christmas). Those children are, then, sent coupons that can be redeemed for new coats at participating local merchants including K-Mart, WalMart, Meijer, and Pamida. Those stores, then, bill Zonta for payment for the coats.

Fantasy Forest--For five years a haunted house was decorated and staffed by Zontians and volunteers and usually operated the Friday and Saturday nights preceding Halloween. In 1996 this project was replaced by a Fantasy Forest. It is held at Lapeer's Rowden Park, which has a mile long asphalt pathway through woods, over bridges and wetlands as well as more meadow like areas. Stations are set up by various organizations and businesses along the pathway. Each station participant must dress in nonthreatening costume, provide some type of activity for children and a treat for those children. Tickets for $3.50 are purchased for each child, $1 for each accompanying adult. (Pre-sale tickets will be availble at Lapeer County Bank & Trust locations for $3 per child, $1 per adult two weeks prior to event).  Each child is given a bag for treats and a booklet of activities for children plus advertisers and information about the Forest and its participants. There are approximately 1,200-2,000 children who visit the Forest and its over 40 stations. The Forest is geared to children ages 10 and under, will be held next on Saturday, October 13, 2007 from 11 - 4 p.m. with last ticket sales at 3 p.m.  Businesses and organizations interested in participating as advertisers and/or stations can review the invitation letter and participant guidelines for stations and submit the attached form.

LACADA--Domestic Violence Shelter for which the Zonta Club of Lapeer Area was instrumental in its establishment and continues to be represented on its Board as well as provides some support both financially and through volunteer assistance.

Helping Hearts--In response to a recommendation from District XV in 2004 for all clubs to consider this initiative a Committee was formed to begin making Comfort Pillows for mastectomy patients to be distributed through the local hospital.  That project in 2005 expanded to multiple distribution centers.  However, if you wish to promote this service, please print and display the poster.  The goal is to supply a pillow to every woman in need within the area with one of the pillows at no charge.  These heart-shaped pillows comfort the surgical patient and provide support during recovery.  They are made of soft fabrics and stuffed with fiberfill so completely washable.  They can be made with a variety of colorful fabrics and, in addition, could be decorated with anything soft and flat, such as embroidery or applique.  Any members and volunteers are welcome to assist in cutting, stuffing, sewing, washing or lending support in other ways to help achieve the goal.  Mary Stikeleather chairs the Committee and can be reached for further details and schedule at 810/667-0242.  Work sessions have been held at Sandra's Sewing Center, 810/667-5400.

Scholarships--A local and two International scholarships are available.
